It will take effect today.
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has asked department and regional leaders to impose a “partial and highly localized” curfew amid large-scale protests that have escalated into clashes, looting, and vandalism.
He made this statement following an emergency meeting at the Ministry of the Interior, according to “European Truth”.
Following an interagency crisis meeting convened after two nights of violent protests, the head of the French government announced a series of measures to address the aftermath of the unrest and maintain order.
Lecornu announced that he had asked the prefects to “impose a series of curfews” on Monday evening, which would be “partial” and “localized” in order to protect businesses, in particular.
The map of curfew areas is to be released on Monday afternoon following discussions with mayors.
“There is very localized unrest in city centers,” the prime minister commented.
Lecornu suggested that the government might declare a state of emergency “if deemed appropriate,” but for now, a curfew “seems more appropriate.”
He also announced a large-scale judicial operation to bring those responsible for violence and looting to justice.
“French men and women must understand how these riots were organized in an entirely new way: during the day by far-left forces, and at night by common criminals,” Lecornu added.
In addition, the French government announced partial unemployment benefits for businesses that suffered damage and looting. Payments will begin on Tuesday.
A special support fund will also be allocated for all businesses affected during the protests.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez announced that police and gendarmerie presence will be increased over the weekend.
He added that “discussions” are currently underway regarding “the doctrine of maintaining public order, managing mass disturbances, and addressing urban violence.”
