The overwhelming majority is against independence.

A majority of voters in the western Canadian province of Alberta voted to keep the province part of the country in a non-binding referendum. This was reported by the television channel CBC News.

According to preliminary results, with votes counted at 1,480 of 5,587 polling stations, 76.2%—or 826,918 voters—voted to keep Alberta part of Canada. Another 23.8%, or 257,726 people, voted in favor of initiating the secession process.

The ballot asked the following question: “Should Alberta remain a province of Canada, or should the Government of Alberta initiate the legal process provided for in the Constitution of Canada to hold a mandatory provincial referendum on Alberta’s secession from Canada?”

According to the provincial election agency, Elections Alberta, approximately 1.36 million residents voted early or used special voting methods.

The ballot contained 10 questions. The first nine concerned immigration and constitutional issues, while the last one addressed Alberta’s future as part of Canada.
