The U.S. president wants to discuss other issues.
U.S. President Donald Trump has stated his willingness to participate in a trilateral summit with Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, but not to discuss ending the war in Ukraine. “I would do that. Not so much for Ukraine’s sake, because Russia, frankly speaking, is behaving quite normally toward Ukraine. It isn’t really doing anything in particular. And the same goes for China,” Trump told reporters. According to him, the main topic of the talks could be nuclear weapons and disarmament.
“If President Xi wants to hold such a meeting, I’ll hold it,” the White House chief added.
Earlier, sources at The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that during their most recent phone call, Putin proposed to Trump that they organize a meeting with the Chinese leader on the sidelines of the APEC summit, which will take place on November 18–19. According to a former Russian intelligence official, Putin views the trilateral meeting as a second Yalta Conference, at which Russia, the U.S., and China could divide the world into spheres of influence. As part of this, Putin hopes to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine on his own terms, the WSJ noted.
