European Parliament Vice President Pina Picerno has gone on a hunger strike to draw the international community’s attention to humanitarian crisis in the temporarily occupied town of Oleshky in the Kherson region.

This was reported by Charter97.org, citing a post by Pina Picerno on H.

The EP official called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, the delivery of food and medicine, and the safe evacuation of residents wishing to leave the city.

“To draw international attention to this emergency, I have begun a hunger strike. But this struggle cannot be mine alone,” she wrote.

Pecherno called on civil society organizations, citizens, and national and local institutions to join the nonviolent campaign.

According to her, it is necessary to demand a humanitarian ceasefire, allow food and medicine into the city, and create conditions for the safe evacuation of civilians.

The Vice President of the European Parliament also emphasized that her initiative is intended to support the efforts of Pope Leo XIV and all those trying to prevent a large-scale humanitarian tragedy.

“The residents of Oleshky cannot be left to fend for themselves. It is time to act together so that diplomacy yields real results and no one dies in silence,” she stated.

Oleshky Under Occupation

As is well known, the humanitarian crisis in the temporarily occupied city has been worsening for several months. Residents are facing shortages of food, medicine, and medical care, and opportunities to leave remain extremely limited due to hostilities and mined roads.

According to reports on the situation in the city, approximately 2,000 civilians remain there. Danger threatens both those who cannot leave and those who are trying to flee the occupied territory.

Earlier, Pope Leo XIV discussed the humanitarian situation in Oleshky with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The pontiff then spoke by phone with dictator Vladimir Putin and called for a resolution to the situation in Oleshky.
