The day before, his son had transported their most valuable assets from Budapest to Dubai.

The Chief Investigative Prosecutor's Office has taken György Matolcsy, the former head of the Hungarian Central Bank and a minister under Viktor Orbán, into custody.

This was reported by the news agency Telex.

György Matolcsy was detained on the morning of Wednesday, October 21. In addition to Matolcsy, several other people were taken into custody, including a lawyer and the owner of a company that carried out the renovation of a villa on the Greek island of Mykonos linked to György’s son Adam Matolcsy.

“My client is suspected of committing economic fraud resulting in significant financial damage, as well as an offense related to the use of a forged private document,” – Pál Batki, the legal representative of György Matolcsy, told the agency.
The attorney added that the suspect’s interrogation has not yet begun and is expected to take place in the morning.

The Central Investigative General Prosecutor’s Office issued a statement indicating that investigative actions are being carried out as part of an investigation into the crime of breach of trust resulting in particularly significant property damage.

In September, the management of the Hungarian National Bank filed a complaint alleging breach of trust, negligence in the performance of official duties, fraud, and abuse of office in connection with the depreciation of five real estate properties owned by the bank.

Shortly thereafter, the chairman of the Hungarian Central Bank Mihály Varga also reported that he had submitted another 30,000 pages of documents by the deadline to the investigative commission looking into abuses related to the bank’s previous activities.

It was previously reported that the son of the former governor of the Hungarian Central Bank, György Matolcsy, is moving his most valuable assets from Budapest to Dubai.

György Matolcsy headed the Hungarian Central Bank until the end of November 2024, when then-Prime Minister Viktor Orbán replaced him with Mihai Varga in an effort to revive the economy ahead of the elections.
