It lasted about three hours.
In St. Petersburg a meeting between Putin and U.S. President’s Special Envoy Steven Whitcroft has concluded.
According to Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov, the meeting lasted about three hours, reports "Radio Liberty".
According to Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, Putin, in a conversation with Whitcoff, expressed his willingness—in principle—to resume trilateral talks with Ukraine and the U.S. on ending the war “in the first ten days of November.” No such talks have taken place since the beginning of the year. Ushakov noted that the discussion should focus on “building a security framework for Russia and Ukraine.”
Whitcoff brought documents to Russia containing proposals for resolving the war. According to Donald Trump’s special envoy, there is a basis for reaching a ceasefire agreement. Whitcoff expressed hope that Putin would consider the possibility of resuming talks between Russia, the U.S., and Ukraine to discuss technical issues.
During his meeting with Whitcoff, Putin thanked Trump for his attention to resolving the war. According to the Russian president, during their most recent phone call, Trump emphasized the need to cease hostilities in order to stop the loss of life.
The Russian president also expressed interest in restoring economic ties with the U.S. and said he intends to discuss with Whitcoff a possible meeting with Trump in China. In addition, Putin expressed his willingness to facilitate a resolution to the conflict surrounding Iran.
A separate topic of discussion was the Russian-American deal on diesel fuel supplies. Putin also announced Russia’s readiness to increase fertilizer supplies to the U.S. market. Whitcoff, speaking on behalf of Trump, thanked the Russian president for the decision regarding the diesel deal.
During the visit, it was reported that Russia had released the American Steven Hubbard, who had been convicted of mercenary activities.
During the meeting, Whitcoff called Putin a humanist. An excerpt from the conversation went viral on social media. “You often say that President Trump is a humanist. You are a humanist, too,” said the U.S. special envoy.
The remark drew criticism from Republican senators. John Cornyn wrote: “No, Putin is a cold-blooded killer.” His colleague Tom Tillis advised Whitcoff to look up the definition of “humanitarian” in the dictionary.
Whitcoff arrived in St. Petersburg on the morning of October 21 after talks in Oslo with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gar Støre. The American negotiator called the meeting productive.
Earlier, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Whitcoff would present the results of the talks with the Ukrainian and European sides to Moscow. No specific agreements on ending the war have been reported yet following the meeting in St. Petersburg.
