A conversation between the U.S. president and the company's CEO has been published.
U.S. President Donald Trump asked Google CEO Sundar Pichai to rename the Atlantic Ocean on Google Maps in his honor or in honor of America. The company refused.
This was reported by The Guardian citing Trump’s remarks at a rally in South Carolina.
How Trump Chose an Ocean
“I only like two oceans: the Atlantic and the Pacific. I won’t name any other ocean ‘Trump’ or ‘America’ besides these two. So we took a serious look at the Atlantic,” Trump said.
According to him, he called Pichai and asked if the company could “handle” such a proposal.
Google’s Response
As Trump recounted, Pichai refused: “No, no, no. I’m not going to do that this time... Oceans are a different matter, sir. They border many countries. Please don’t ask us to do that.”
“So, I guess I’ll pass. Pass? I think it should stay the Atlantic Ocean,” the U.S. president concluded.
The Guardian reached out to Google for comment.
Trump first spoke about renaming the oceans back in late August, when he signed an executive order regarding Lake Ontario. “We have a bay, we have a lake—now we need an ocean,” he explained at the time, setting his sights on the Atlantic or the Pacific.
The renaming of the lake, which separates the U.S. and Canada, was taken very badly in Ottawa. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded to Trump by reminding him of the historical context of the name.
Landmarks honoring Trump himself are also popping up. In January, a section of South Boulevard in Florida—running from Palm Beach Airport to his Mar-a-Lago residence—was named after the U.S. president.
