The plant sustained critical damage.
Operations at the Perm Oil Refinery was halted after a strike by Ukrainian drones on Friday, October 23. This was reported by Reuters, citing informed sources.
The Perm refinery ranks seventh in Russia in terms of oil processing volume, with a capacity of about 13 million metric tons per year. It produces gasoline, diesel, fuel oil, and other petroleum products. Last Friday, it was forced to shut down.
“Operations were suspended following an attack by Ukrainian drones on Friday. According to two industry sources, the strike caused a fire and damaged pipelines, oil storage tanks, and processing units,” the article states.
It is unclear how quickly the facility will be able to resume operations. The removal of such a major producer from the market has exacerbated the situation in Russia’s domestic fuel market—the shortage has worsened.
Ukraine’s operation against Russia’s oil industry continues, despite enormous pressure from the U.S. The White House is demanding that Ukraine unilaterally halt its attacks on oil refineries. Kyiv is willing to pause the operation only if Moscow agrees to an energy truce, but the Kremlin is categorically opposed.
