The fire largely destroyed the building.
On Saturday night, a fire broke out again at the “Kelsteinhaus” in Bavaria, Germany—a former mountain retreat of the Nazi leadership located at an altitude of more than 1,800 meters.
This was reported by the DPA news agency.
According to police, the fire reignited overnight and spread to the upper floors after a massive fire raged through the building on Friday. Firefighters were dispatched to the historic monument atop the Oberzalzberg mountain and extinguished the flames.
According to police, it is not unusual for a fire to reignite due to smoldering embers after the main blaze has been extinguished.
The “Haus am Kelstein,” also known as the “Eagle’s Nest,” was built under the Nazi regime in the 1930s as part of a complex that Hitler used on Mount Obersalzberg.
A restaurant has operated in the building since 1952. Hitler visited the “Eagle’s Nest” several times to host diplomats and other foreign guests there.
At the same time, the residence was of little political significance and was mainly used by high-ranking officials of the Nazi regime for recreation and private celebrations. The building now houses an exhibition dedicated to its history during the Nazi era.
On Friday evening, a major fire broke out at the “Eagle’s Nest.” Police have detained a suspect in connection with the arson.
According to the prosecutor’s office, a preliminary psychiatric evaluation of the 33-year-old German citizen revealed that he suffers from a mental illness.
The fire largely destroyed the building. The damage is estimated at millions of euros.
