Mass protests took place in Italy, during which a group of demonstrators broke into the Colosseum. Neither the historic monument nor the tourists were harmed.

Thousands of people took to the streets of Italian cities to protest the rising cost of living, express their lack of confidence in the government of Giorgia Meloni, and oppose the war in the Middle East. The protests were largely peaceful, and only nine people were arrested nationwide, according to Euronews.

In Rome, a small group of protesters broke away from the main march and headed toward the Colosseum. Reportedly, the protesters managed to enter the Flavian Amphitheater, chanting slogans and holding up signs.

Later, law enforcement officers escorted them out of the historic site.

DW published footage showing demonstrators attempting to break through the iron bars into the ancient Roman amphitheater, where tourists were present at the time.

“Don’t touch or break anything,” ilGiornale quotes some protesters as telling their comrades not to damage the structures.

The Ministry of Culture subsequently reported that the monument was not damaged as a result of the unauthorized intrusion.
