The result was unexpected.

Brazil's incumbent president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won the second round of the election and was re-elected to a fourth presidential term. According to the country's electoral authority, he received 51.79% of the vote

His opponent, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, received 59,826,041 votes (48.21%).

The result was unexpected: it defied predictions and halted a string of victories by right-wing candidates in elections across Latin America, writes Reuters. Bolsonaro stated that he would seek to overturn the results due to the Supreme Court’s decision to extend voting by two hours.

Lula da Silva served as president from 2003 to 2010. In 2018–2019, he was imprisoned on corruption charges, but the charges were later dropped. In 2022, the politician won the election and returned to the presidency in 2023; he has now been re-elected to a fourth term.

Lula da Silva’s victory deprives U.S. President Donald Trump of a major ally in the region, Reuters notes. The agency also points out that the Brazilian leader’s new term could be his most challenging yet, as the country has elected its most conservative Congress since the return to democracy in the 1980s.
