Serbian Students Deserve The Nobel Peace Prize

This is the most striking example of the power of nonviolent protests.

The student movement’s victory in Serbia’s parliamentary elections served as an example of how mass protests can lead to political change without violence. Young activists managed to challenge the system of former President Aleksandar Vučić, who controlled state institutions, through self-organization, a refusal to engage in confrontation, and participation in the elections, writes conflict resolution expert Edward P. Joseph in an article for Foreign Policy.

The protest movement was sparked by a tragedy at the train station in Novi Sad, where 16 people were killed. Students demanded that the authorities take responsibility for what had happened. After peaceful demonstrations were broken up, discontent spread throughout the country.

Unlike many protest movements, Serbian students did not limit themselves to street demonstrations and did not shy away from participating in politics. They organized meetings in cities and small towns, formed local groups, and decided to field their own slate of candidates.

Strict rules governed the selection of candidates; they underwent several stages of vetting and were not allowed to have any party affiliation. The students deliberately distanced themselves from the traditional opposition, which many voters considered ineffective.

“The desire to bring about change, rather than hatred, became the driving force behind cooperation and collective decision-making,” Joseph writes.

Now it is important for the European Union and the United States to help Serbia navigate its political transition, strengthen the rule of law, and restore relations with its neighbors, including Kosovo. However, a victory in the parliamentary elections alone is not enough: advocates of change must ensure the accountability of law enforcement agencies and prevent the old system from persisting under new leadership.

The expert is convinced that discipline, perseverance, courage, and the rejection of personal ambitions make the Serbian student movement worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize.
