How can the U.S. help?
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asked U.S. President Donald Trump to impose sanctions against Russian and Chinese companies that, according to him, are involved in creating a Russian counterpart to Starlink. The Ukrainian president made this statement in an interview with Financial Times, published on October 3.
As the publication notes, blocking Starlink for the occupiers has prompted Russia to accelerate the development of its own satellite network, “Rassvet”. According to Zelenskyy, China is assisting Russia in this effort.
He stated that China is working with Russia on this technology, and “Rassvet” could become operational “by the end of this year or early next year.” According to him, Beijing is involved in satellite development and is helping Russia create a counterpart to Starlink.
Zelenskyy warned that such a capability would allow the Kremlin to increase the accuracy of its airstrikes, as Putin intensifies shelling of Ukraine ahead of winter.
The Ukrainian leader noted that he had appealed to Trump “several times” to impose sanctions against the organizations involved, most recently last month in New York, where they met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry, the Kremlin, and the White House did not respond to requests for comment. Previously, Beijing had rejected Zelenskyy’s accusations that it supports Russia in the war against Ukraine.
