The Kremlin's Bizarre Logic

The main thing is that the Potemkin villages remain standing.

Dmitry Peskov: Massive attacks by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on Moscow during the Russia–Africa Summit are quite strange.

“This is quite strange because it’s a global-scale event taking place in the Russian capital. Of course, organizing such a massive drone attack on Moscow at this time is strange.”

Peskov also stated that these attacks once again underscore the need to continue the special military operation, noting the effective performance of the air defense system.

Peskov’s outrage at Ukraine’s actions—daring to strike Moscow at a time when the “Russia-Africa” summit is taking place there—serves as a vivid demonstration of the inhuman logic through which the Putin regime perceives reality.

The press secretary of the “dominant tour guide” is dissatisfied not so much with the fact of the airstrike itself as with the timing of when it was carried out. Peskov specifically emphasizes that an important international event is taking place in Moscow at this time and, he claims, it is inappropriate to bomb the city under these circumstances.

The question isn’t even why Peskov’s boss invited foreign guests to a city under enemy attack. The question lies in the very logic of their dissatisfaction, which appears to be entirely sincere.

The Kremlin spokesman seems to be suggesting that striking Russian cities and killing the country’s residents—including those in Moscow—is tolerable, but disrupting an international event organized by the Kremlin is outright despicable.

At the heart of Peskov’s logic is not the individual, but the state—its status, prestige, international events, and the need to impress foreign guests.

Let the ordinary villages burn; the main thing is that the Potemkin villages remain standing.
