The Telegraph: Melania Trump Is Now Closer To A Peace Prize Than Her Husband

The name Trump may appear on the list of winners.
U.S. First Lady Melania Trump played an important role in reaching an agreement on humanitarian operation in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky in the Kherson region. And this potentially paves the way for her to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, which her husband Donald Trump so desperately dreams of winning. This is discussed in an op-ed for The Telegraph, military correspondent Hamish de Bretton-Gordon writes about this.
He notes that Melania worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian officials to make the humanitarian mission possible. However, this agreement was a continuation of her previous efforts to reunite Ukrainian children whom Russia had separated from their families during the war.
“While the president and his defense secretary Pete Hagsett favored bellicose rhetoric and displays of military force, the first lady was quietly engaged in something else: humanitarian diplomacy, which brought Russia and Ukraine to the negotiating table,” notes de Bretton-Gordon.
Despite all the risks, the author considers the agreement reached to be an important humanitarian achievement. According to de Bretton-Gordon, it is Melania, not her husband, who deserves consideration in the context of a possible nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. The author believes that her diplomatic efforts demonstrate the importance of a humanitarian approach, in contrast to Donald Trump’s desire to receive personal recognition for ending wars.
“If Melania is considered for the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo next year, it will be an irony that, I suspect, many will find appealing. Her husband has made no secret of his desire to receive this award. But perhaps the greatest prize she could bring home would be something far more valuable: a lesson for the president that peace is a matter of humanity, not personal glory,” the columnist notes.
