At a certain point, the conversation took a different turn.
Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Støre called Russian President Vladimir Putin on October 27 because they wanted to speak with him before the start of the Ukraine talks in Abu Dhabi. The Finnish leader mentioned this in an interview with Yle.
According to Stubb, at the beginning of the phone call, Putin outlined his interpretation of the events that have been unfolding in Ukraine since 2014. The conversation then took a constructive turn. The parties engaged in a substantive discussion.
The idea to call the Kremlin leader came to Stubb and Stere during talks on October 20 in Norway with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. representatives.
The Ukrainian leader and the U.S. presidential administration were aware of this initiative and approved it. It was no coincidence that Stubb and Steri called Putin on October 27. They wanted to speak with him before the trilateral peace talks in Abu Dhabi involving the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia, which are tentatively scheduled for November.
The Finnish president emphasized that Helsinki does not claim to be a party to the negotiations with Russia. This was an attempt to establish a channel for dialogue between Europe and Putin.
