Amid School Protests In France, All Classes Have Been Canceled Through The End Of The Week

The country's prime minister called the recent demonstrations lawful and democratic.

Amid ongoing student protests, classes in French schools will be suspended until the end of the week so that each school can discuss the students’ demands with them. This was announced by Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu in the National Assembly, according to the newspaper Le Soir.

According to the head of government, Education Minister Édouard Geoffroy decided to free up time in the schedule starting Wednesday morning, as well as on Thursday and Friday.

The prime minister described today’s demonstrations as lawful and democratic, stating that he views them “with great respect and relief.” At the same time, he called on politicians to “stand in solidarity” with the affected school staff.

“There can be no room for tolerance of violence,” he emphasized.

Lecornu also rejected accusations that the authorities had ordered the police to use harsh tactics. According to him, law enforcement officers were given “instructions on proportionality.” Responding to a question about the injured students, the prime minister said that “accidents can happen.”

Protests by high school students began in mid-September due to a shortage of teachers, poor conditions in schools, and overloaded schedules. On Tuesday, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, classes were suspended at 891 out of 3,700 high schools.
