So that Russians would “reconsider their values.”

Director and propagandist Nikita Mikhalkov stated that the war with Ukraine was “sent” to Russia by God so that Russians would reevaluate their values. According to Mikhalkov, the current events were meant to make society “wake up” and realize what truly matters in life. “I understand that this phrase is rather strange, but God sent us this war so that we would wake up, so that we would understand what true values are worth and what they are,” he told the propaganda outlet RT. Speaking about “true values,” the director specifically warned against an excessive pursuit of pleasure. In his words, it is dangerous when life begins to be measured by “the quantity and quality of entertainment.”

To illustrate his point, Mikhalkov recounted an experiment involving a white mouse, which, he said, was given the opportunity to experience pleasure by pressing a button. “Scientists conducted an experiment: they took a white mouse, hooked it up to something, and showed it that if it pressed the button, it would experience pleasure. It pressed the button once, twice, five times—and then it pressed the button again and died. This is, so to speak, a very telling image—the feeling of a never-ending celebration that hasn’t stopped even now; it continues,” the propagandist stated, without specifying exactly which scientists conducted the experiment he described or when it took place. At the same time, he added, some people “already understand” that “it’s too early to celebrate.”

Mikhalkov himself, however, is in no hurry to give up his pleasures. According to leaked data, he is the wealthiest among Russian television propagandists: the host of “Besogon” on the “Rossiya” channel earns more than 270 million rubles a year. In addition, Mikhalkov has over 2.5 billion rubles in various bank accounts, which bring him an additional 515 million rubles in interest annually.

In recent years, Mikhalkov has transformed from a renowned film director into one of the regime’s most prominent propagandists. On the program “Besogon TV,” he spread anti-Western narratives and conspiracy theories, and referred to the Russian invasion of Ukraine as a “fight against Satanism” and the “liberation of Donbas.” He also insulted Russians who oppose the war and have left the country. The director maintains close ties with Vladimir Putin, whom he has called “a powerful leader in world politics who is aware of his historical responsibility” toward Russia.
