According to AP, the protesters are demanding the resignation of the head of the Election Commission of India Gyanesh Kumar and the protection of the country’s democratic institutions.

Most of the protesters gathered at Ramlila Maidan. Protesters brought flags and musical instruments and chanted slogans criticizing the central government’s policies. Authorities deployed thousands of police officers and paramilitary personnel to patrol the streets and quell unrest.

One of the main organizers of the rallies has been the “People’s Party of Cockroaches” movement.
