Trump Decided To Pin The Blame For The Failure With Iran On Hegset

General Dan Kane also found himself in the crosshairs.

U.S. President Donald Trump is considering the possibility of resuming military strikes against Iran, while simultaneously trying to identify those responsible for the protracted conflict. Discontent is growing in the White House toward those who promised the president a quick and decisive victory. U.S. Secretary of War Pita Hegset and General Dan Kane, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, have come under suspicion, according to The Atlantic (translation by Charter97.org).

Trump has been discussing new attacks for several weeks now, intended to force Tehran back to the negotiating table. One option involves strikes lasting from several hours to several weeks. Another is maintaining the U.S. naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

At the same time, the U.S. president is questioning his allies about the work of military advisers. Some members of his inner circle suspect the Pentagon chief of sugarcoating the situation on the front lines, telling Trump exactly what he wants to hear.

“Hegset knows how to tell the president what he wants to hear,” said one of Trump’s close advisers.

The U.S. Secretary of War also found himself at the center of a scandal following the dismissal of a lieutenant general suspected of leaking information to journalists. To investigate the allegations, Hegset ordered several polygraph tests to be conducted. The Pentagon fears that the purge of the top brass is weakening the position of military advisers.
The political fallout from the war is also heightening tensions. Republicans risk losing their majorities in the House of Representatives and the Senate in the midterm elections. Trump attributes his problems to the conflict and is looking for someone to shift the blame onto.

However, new strikes may not force Iran to back down but could instead lead to further escalation, the depletion of U.S. ammunition stocks, and a rise in global oil prices.

U.S. Democratic Senator Chris Murphy called the proposed military plans “insane,” warning of the risk of a devastating escalation.
