Krzysztof Szczerski decided to end his mission amid a constitutional crisis.
Poland’s Permanent Representative to the UN Krzysztof Szczerski has resigned amid the situation with the Constitutional Tribunal in the country. This was reported by the Secretary of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maciej Wewiór on social media platform X.
“Ambassador Krzysztof Szczerski asked Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski to terminate his diplomatic mission to the UN. Minister Sikorski granted this request. Ambassador Szczerski will conclude his mission later this month,” the secretary wrote.
On the evening of October 30, a crowd of protesters gathered in front of the Constitutional Tribunal building in Warsaw. Among those gathered were the president of the “Law and Justice” party and opposition leader Jarosław Kaczyński and former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
The situation escalated due to a conflict over the court’s leadership. An announcement appeared on the court’s website regarding the removal of its president, Bogdan Swięczkowski, and his deputy, Bartłomiej Sohanski. Judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska declared herself acting head of the tribunal as the judge with the longest tenure.
