NATO tested technology for detecting moving objects—specifically drones—using 5G mobile networks in Latvia. This was reported by Defence Industry Europe.

The experiment was conducted in a densely built-up urban area to test the effectiveness of using communications infrastructure for surveillance.

The technology relies on using existing cell towers not only for data transmission but also as passive sensors. Signals from base stations make it possible to detect the movement of objects within the network’s coverage area, eliminating the need to install additional and expensive radar transmitters.

The tests were conducted as part of the two-week Digital Backbone Experimentation 2026, which concluded on October 30. Representatives from the United States, Germany, Canada, Finland, the Baltic states, and more than 60 technology partners participated in the project, underscoring the initiative’s high international standing.
