(updated) The first voting results are in.

Elections for the 120th Congress have begun in the U.S.: the entire House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate are up for re-election. The first polling places have already closed.

Charter97.org is following the developments.

4:00 a.m. Early results from the U.S. midterm congressional elections show Democratic candidates leading in several states, according to CNN.

Specifically, Democrats are leading in three congressional districts in Indiana. In the fifth congressional district, Democrat J.D. Ford is leading incumbent Republican Congresswoman Victoria Spartz. As of this writing, about 29% of the votes have been counted. In the state’s third district, Democratic candidate Kelly Thompson is also leading incumbent Republican Congresswoman Marlin Stutzman. About 31% of the votes have been counted there. In Indiana’s 6th district, Democrat Cynthia Wirth holds a narrow lead over incumbent Republican Congressman Jefferson Shrive. However, only about 6% of the votes have been counted.

In the neighboring state of Kentucky, the race for the 6th congressional district is between Republican Ralph Alvarado and Democrat Zach Dembo. CNN rates the candidates’ chances as roughly even. About 1% of the votes have been counted in the district.

According to CNN’s projection, in Virginia, incumbent Democratic Senator Mark Warner will be re-elected to a fourth term, defeating Republican Bert Mizusawa. Warner serves as vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee; he previously served as governor of Virginia.

In addition, in Florida, Democrat Debbie Wasserman Schultz was re-elected to the House of Representatives from the 20th congressional district, the AP reports. She defeated Republican Brent Andersen and won a seat for her 12th term. Wasserman-Schultz previously served as chair of the Democratic National Committee.

3:36 a.m. U.S. President Donald Trump is monitoring the vote count in the midterm congressional elections alongside a small group of allies and cabinet members in the East Room of the White House, the network CNN reported, citing sources.

According to CNN sources, Trump told aides that his involvement in the election campaign—including campaign spending, remote appearances, and trips to raise funds and support Republican candidates—gave the Republicans a chance to compete for victory.

Trump also said that he had been following the preliminary election results on Fox News, but was dissatisfied with the voice of anchor Jessica Tarlov.

“I’m watching the preliminary election results on Fox News, but I can’t stand Jessica Tarlov’s voice. She’s as dumb as a cork, but it’s her voice that annoys me the most. I’ll have to go somewhere else until this loser disappears from the air. I’ll be back later!” the U.S. president wrote on the social media platform Truth Social.

3:21 a.m. According to the first exit polls published by CBS News, voters view the Democratic Party more favorably than the Republican Party.
According to the poll, 46% of voters view Democrats favorably, while 41% view Republicans favorably. At the same time, a majority of respondents view both parties negatively: 54% view the Democratic Party negatively, and 59% view the Republican Party negatively.

As CBS News notes, roughly one in five voters who voted for Democratic candidates for the House of Representatives views the Democratic Party itself negatively. At the same time, the study shows that most Democratic supporters are primarily motivated by their disagreement with the policies of President Donald Trump when casting their votes.
