Tehran had previously excluded this issue from the agenda.
Iranian authorities have expressed a willingness to discuss with the U.S. side issues related to the country’s nuclear program—a topic that had previously been excluded from the agenda. This was reported to the agency Bloomberg by a diplomat familiar with the negotiations who wished to remain anonymous.
According to the source, Iran is considering proposals put forward by Qatar, which is acting as a mediator in the negotiations.
The office of the Emir of Qatar stated that Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and U.S. President Donald Trump discussed efforts to resolve differences between the warring parties.
“His Highness the Emir and the U.S. President discussed recent developments on the international agenda, in particular, Qatar’s efforts to find a compromise between the parties concerned and to support the negotiation process—part of the path toward a comprehensive agreement that will end the crisis and ensure security and stability in the region,” the office’s website states.
The day before, Trump held his first meeting with national security advisers since the midterm elections, focusing on Iran. According to Axios, the U.S. president is considering three options for how the conflict might unfold: launching new strikes, increasing economic pressure on Tehran, or reaching an agreement that would entail significant concessions to Iran.
Trump added that he “would prefer not to destroy the rest of the country,” but did not rule out that possibility.
