The Democrats Could Spark A Foreign Policy Revolution In The U.S.

The new Congress has been presented with a historic opportunity.

The new Democratic majority in the U.S. Congress must immediately work to end the wars in Iran and Ukraine, including by using its ability to block federal government funding. However, these changes should not be limited to opposing the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. Washington needs to rethink its very approach to military interventions, corruption, and the influence of the wealthiest individuals on public policy, writes Foreign Affairs analyst Matthew Dass in Foreign Affairs> magazine.

To do so, Democrats could refuse to support additional military spending and, if necessary, block the government’s stopgap funding bill. The next opportunity to exert such pressure is December 11, when the current budget agreement expires.

“The most serious threats to the security and well-being of Americans come from within the country,” writes Dass, citing political polarization, corruption, the influence of billionaires, and the abuse of presidential powers.

Democrats may investigate not only the actions of the current administration but also the mistakes of previous administrations from both parties. In particular, this refers to the Joe Biden administration’s support for Israel, which, according to the expert, helped create the conditions for the current war.

Another area of focus is investigating conflicts of interest within Trump’s inner circle, including foreign gifts to the president, government contracts awarded to his political donors, and the activities of his special envoys.

Dass also proposes reforming campaign finance and limiting the influence of large corporations and foreign donors on American politics.

At the same time, foreign policy must be linked to the everyday problems faced by Americans—rising prices, high fuel costs, and the threat of job losses due to artificial intelligence.
