Due to the government's planned reforms of the public administration.

More than 1,500 town halls in Romania have announced a warning strike over the government's planned public administration reforms.

According to News.ro.

The warning strike was announced for Tuesday in 1,582 local councils from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. A congress of local government representatives is due to be held at the same time, where Prime Minister Ilie Bolhogan will make his arguments.

On Monday, the prime minister said that if local governments fail to get things going with fewer staff and lower costs, the issue of administrative-territorial organization is likely to come up.

"We can no longer hand over large sums to local governments. Romanians should know what the situation is: in Europe, all the revenues that city governments collect - local taxes, property taxes - usually cover all their expenses; in Romania, all the local revenues cover only a quarter of the expenses. So this is a big problem. We are the country with the highest expenditure from the state budget for local needs," explains Bolhogan.
