They may enter into a one-year contract with the option of a one-year extension during martial law.
Ukrainian men over the age of 60 have been allowed to sign a one-year contract to serve in the AFU with the possibility of extending it for another year during martial law. The corresponding decree was signed by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.
The document regulates the procedure for accepting Ukrainians over 60 years old for service and specifies a number of procedures related to the training, appointment, transfer and dismissal of servicemen.
Men over 60 years old can serve in the AFU under a contract with the written consent of the commander of the military unit and provided that military medical commissions have recognized them fit for military service for health reasons. If it is a question of concluding a contract for an officer position, the commander can give written consent to this only after the approval of the candidate by the General Staff of the AFU.
In case martial law is abolished, contracts with men over 60 years of age are terminated prematurely and servicemen are dismissed from service.
