The facility was occupied by government forces in coordination with Washington.

US troops have left the territory of the al-Tanf military base and redeployed to neighboring Jordan, Reuters writes, citing two sources.

The Syrian Defense Ministry announced that units of the country's armed forces, in coordination with the US side, have occupied the territory of the base.

The U.S. Central Command of the Armed Forces (CENTCOM) in X confirmed the withdrawal of troops from the al-Tanf base as part of a planned transition carried out by the Operation Unwavering Resolute Joint Task Force.

On January 18, Syrian President in Transition Ahmed al-Sharaa signed a ceasefire agreement and the phased integration of Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) personnel, which consisted mostly of Kurds and were backed by the US, into the government army. The agreement also stipulates that the responsibility for camps and prisons with imprisoned IS members is fully transferred to the Syrian government.

The US is considering the option of a complete withdrawal of its troops from Syria, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported. According to the publication, there were about 1,000 U.S. military personnel in the country, most of them at facilities in northeastern Syria together with SDF forces. Also, a small portion of US troops were stationed at the al-Tanf base in the south.

According to three US officials, the Pentagon questioned the viability of the US mission in Syria after the SDF's defeat of Syria's transitional government army.
