Reuters: US Prepares For Large-scale Operation In Iran

Government agencies could be at risk.

The US War Department is preparing troops for a potential operation against Iran, which military commanders plan could last several weeks if President Donald Trump orders it.

The Reuters reported, citing senior US officials.

The agency's sources said this could be a much broader conflict than previous clashes between the US and Iran.

The planning for such action comes amid ongoing diplomatic negotiations over Iran's nuclear program, particularly recent talks in Oman, which have sought to restore diplomacy between the countries following the increased US military presence in the region.

The U.S. War Department is already moving additional forces to the Middle East - among other things, a second aircraft carrier, thousands of troops, fighter jets, missile destroyers and other combat units capable of both striking and defending themselves in the event of an attack.

One official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the topic, said the current planning is more complex than a previous operation targeting only nuclear infrastructure.

In the event of a prolonged conflict, U.S. military forces could also target Iran's government and security facilities, not just nuclear ones.

Experts warn that the threat of strikes from Iran and the country's powerful missile arsenal increase the risk of escalation and possible expansion of the conflict to the entire region. The U.S. military expects Tehran could respond to the attacks with retaliatory strikes over an extended period of time.

White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt said the president has "all options on the table" on Iran, but did not reveal details about the planned operation.

The publication stresses that such measures come amid Donald Trump's continued threats to strike Iran over its nuclear and ballistic program, as well as in response to a crackdown on domestic protests.
