Warsaw is withdrawing from the Ottawa Convention.

Poland after withdrawal from the Ottawa Convention will be able to mine the border with anti-personnel mines in 48 hours in case of a threat. This was announced by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, speaking at the Zielenka military training range, dziennik.pl.

He said Poland "in these hours" is withdrawing from the Ottawa Convention, which prohibits the use, stockpiling, production and transfer of anti-personnel mines. The country intends to use the munitions as part of the Eastern Shield project to secure its borders from Belarus and the "Russian enclave" in Kaliningrad.

"We are in the process of finalizing this project, which is crucial for our security, for the security of our territory and borders," Tusk said.

Poland announced it would begin the process of withdrawing from the Ottawa Convention in August 2025, and approved the start of the process before that in March. It should be six months before the official withdrawal - the deadline expires on February 20, 2026.
