Belarus Introduced Restrictions On Unlimited Internet Access

Once the traffic reaches 30 GB, the speed will be limited.

February 23, restrictions on unlimited Internet have been launched in Belarus. The volume of traffic remains the same, but the speed will significantly decrease, writes tochka.by.

According to the decree № 38 of the Ministry of Communications and Informatization, operators will be obliged to provide subscribers with an initial package of 30 GB of traffic at maximum speed. Once the traffic reaches 30 GB, it will be limited, but not below the guaranteed threshold of 1 Mbps.

The Ministry explained that these measures were taken because of "significant consumption of cellular network resources by individual subscribers".

The nuances were earlier described by the so-called head of the "tent" commission on industry, energy, transport, communications and digital development Yuri Panfilov.

The limited speed - 1 Mbps - is still enough to communicate in messengers, read the news and even talk on a video call.

"Even a lower speed allows you to work in the network without loss of quality. Therefore, no problems will arise. Resolution No. 38 has a caveat: if a user exceeds 30 GB, he can buy additional gigabytes - either by volume or by time," the deputy added.

In addition, the restrictions apply only to mobile Internet, Panfilov emphasized. It does not apply to home Wi-Fi - it is wired Internet.

"Business will not suffer either. The regulation is not static. We will study the practice of application, see how the situation will level out, and we should feel an improvement in the quality of communication throughout the country," he noted.

Panfilov said that if 4G and 5G technologies develop, and infrastructure and mobile operators increase their bandwidth, the limit may increase.
