Global import duties have officially taken effect in the United States. President Donald Trump initially announced a rate hike to 15%, but the White House said the duty on imports will be 10% of the price starting February 24.
The discrepancies have added to the uncertainty surrounding US trade policy. According to NBC News, the increase to 15% will come at a later date. The duties that were overturned by the Supreme Court have been put on hold. As Reuters writes, the mechanism for possible refunds to companies of funds paid under the invalid regime is still unclear. Japan has already formally requested guarantees from the U.S. to maintain the conditions that are spelled out in the 2025 bilateral agreement, Trade Minister Resei Akazawa said. Tokyo fears that some Japanese exports could be hit by higher duties.
Fund indices in Europe reacted with declines to uncertainty over trade policy. The pan-European STOXX 600 fell 0.1 percent over the morning of Feb. 24. Deutsche Bank analysts added that the situation may be clarified by the President's State of the Union address to Congress, scheduled for the evening of February 24.
The U.S. Supreme Court declared illegal the large-scale import duties imposed on February 20. The justices ruled by a six to three vote that Trump exceeded his authority when he used the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose the tariffs.
