Russia Is Running Out Of Tractors And Combines

  • 27.02.2026, 10:11

The Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine has learned some interesting facts.

In Russia, according to experts, the market of agricultural machinery currently lacks about 62,000 tractors and 34,000 combines, which can negatively affect food production.

About this reported by the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine.

According to the SVR, sales of agricultural machinery in Russia have fallen by 25%. Sales of combine harvesters and forage harvesters, tractors, plows and cultivators fell especially noticeably. But the production of agricultural machinery in Russia has also decreased.

For example, in January - February 2025, Russian companies produced 11% less agricultural machinery. The Russian agricultural machinery market already lacks about 62 thousand tractors and 34 thousand combines. As a result of all this, the wear and tear of the machine and tractor fleet has exceeded 50%. At the same time, the renewal rate of agricultural machinery is only 3.5%, while the norm is 10%.

SVR believes that the crisis of the Russian market of agricultural machinery has already become systemic and it may adversely affect crop yields and food production.

The reason is the lagging technological base, which is caused by the impact of Western economic sanctions that the U.S., Europe and other countries have imposed against Russia for the Russian army's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The high discount rate has also led to serious problems in Russia's agribusiness sector. Because of this, the income of Russian agriculture is annually reduced by 5-8 billion dollars.

For example, if in 2020 in Russia the profitability of crop production was 40%, in 2025 - only about 15%. Grain production in Russia is now unprofitable.

Because of serious problems in agriculture, according to the SVR forecast, Russia may face food shortages and food prices may increase.
