The U.S. president said the island was in big trouble.
The US could make a "friendly takeover of Cuba," US President Donald Trump said while answering questions from reporters on the front lawn of the White House. His words were reported by Bloomberg correspondent Josh Wingrow.
"The Cuban government is negotiating with us. As you know, they're in big trouble. They don't have any money. They don't have anything right now. But they are negotiating with us. And maybe we'll make a friendly takeover of Cuba," Trump said.
This is not the first time Trump has moved to openly threaten Cuba, pointing out that the island's government is "hanging by a thread" and the U.S. has no choice but to "come in and blow the place up." In response, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel warned that the country is ready to defend itself.
"Don't intimidate us, your current threats remind us of everything that almost all previous U.S. administrations with hawks at the helm have threatened us with," Diaz-Canel said.
