There are dead and 40 injured.
In Milan, a streetcar derailed and crashed into a building, killing two people and injuring about 40 others.
It was reported by BBC.
A real horror gripped the center of Milan in the midst of Fashion Week. A new three-car streetcar derailed at breakneck speed, rammed a traffic light and crashed into the wall of a house, smashing a restaurant window. The tragedy claimed the lives of two people, dozens more were injured.
The tragedy occurred around 16:00 on the busy street Viale Vittorio Veneto (route number 9). The streetcar, crowded with passengers, suddenly lost control. First, the multi-ton vehicle demolished a traffic light, and then, without stopping, flew into the facade of the building, literally sealing itself in the window of a local institution.
Witnesses describe the moment of collision as a scenario from a horror movie.
"It was terrible. I fell to the floor with the others, everything was crashing around me. I was sure that a powerful earthquake had started," recalled one of the passengers.
Victims and victims
Unfortunately, deaths could not be avoided. According to preliminary data, two people died: a 60-year-old pedestrian, who had the misfortune to be on the path of uncontrolled transport, and one of the passengers inside the car.
The total number of injured reaches 40 people. Rescuers had to literally cut people out of the mangled metal. Most of the injured are passengers who suffered fractures and bruises during the sharp impact.
Investigation Versions
Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala has already visited the scene. The authorities are trying to understand what led to the accident on the route, where the ultra-modern streetcar of a new type, introduced just a few weeks ago, was working.
Now they are considering several versions:
The health of the driver: it is assumed that the man could suddenly become ill. He is known to be an experienced worker and had only been on shift for an hour at the time of the accident.
Technical failure: the streetcar missed several stops before the accident, which could indicate a faulty braking or control system.
Milan in mourning
The tragedy occurred at an extremely busy time for the city. Milan is now overflowing with tourists and international stars because of Fashion Week. In addition, the city has just hosted the Winter Olympics and is preparing for the Paralympics.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has already expressed condolences to the families of the victims, and transportation company ATM has promised full cooperation in the investigation.
