New details of the attack have emerged.
Tehran has struck US military bases in the Middle East and Israel in response to massive attacks from them, writes The Moscow Times.
According to Iranian publication Fars, the missile strike hit a U.S. base in Bahrain, which is Washington's key ally in the Persian Gulf and the permanent location of the headquarters of the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet (in the capital Manama).
According to Bahrain News Agency, a Fifth Fleet service center was hit. Bahrain's Interior Ministry urged citizens to immediately move to the nearest safe place. Explosions were also reported in Kuwait, which also hosts US military bases where up to 13,500 US troops are estimated to be stationed.
In addition, Iran hit Qatar with at least two missiles. The country's Defense Ministry said that its army "managed to successfully prevent a number of attacks targeting the country's territory...all missiles were intercepted before reaching Qatar's territory" using the Patriot system. Afterward, according to Aljazeera, explosions erupted in Qatar's capital Doha. Explosions also went off in the UAE capital Abu Dhabi, eyewitnesses told Reuters, with smoke rising over the city. According to Fars, Iran's attacks targeted the US air bases of Al Udeid in Qatar, Al Salem in Kuwait and Al Dhafra in the UAE, as well as the "Fifth US Base in Bahrain". Israel has also been subjected to rocket attacks from the Islamic Republic: an air alert was declared in different regions of the country.
With large-scale mutual firing, the Gulf countries, following Iran and Israel, are closing their airspace. This has already been announced by Qatar, Kuwait and the UAE.
According to Reuters and New York Times sources, Iranian officials were the main target of the U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran. Two CNN interlocutors told CNN that the U.S. military plans to continue attacks against Iran for several days. The network's Israeli source said Israel is also preparing for several days of strikes against Iran and is ready to escalate the attacks if necessary. President Donald Trump said in a video message Saturday that the attacks are "massive and systemic."
According to Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, the military operation against Iran is aimed at eliminating an "existential threat." "Israel and the United States have launched an operation to eliminate the existential threat posed by the terrorist regime in Iran. I thank our great friend, President Donald Trump, for his historic leadership."
