There are fatalities.
In Colombia, unknown assailants opened fire with automatic weapons on the motorcade of a sitting senator, killing several of the politician's security guards.
According to Bloomberg.
The attack came weeks before important parliamentary elections scheduled for March 8, 2026.
According to the agency, the incident occurred while the politician's motorcade was traveling in the eastern part of the country when automatic weapons fire was opened toward the transport. The shooting left several of the senator's security guards dead, with no information yet on the consequences for politicians or civilians.
The attack on the motorcade came a month before the start of the electoral campaign, when citizens will vote on the composition of Colombia's congress, and in the midst of preparations for the May-June 2026 presidential race.
This level of violence only heightens concerns about the safety of politicians and the stability of the electoral process in a country with a long history of political attacks and related investigations.
There has been no official comment from Colombian law enforcement officials or the senator himself about the attack. Law enforcers continue to investigate the circumstances of the shooting and search for possible witnesses or evidence that would help establish the motives and perpetrators of the attack.
Bloomberg writes that such attacks come amid heightened political tensions in Colombia: back in 2025, one of the leading opposition senators and potential presidential candidates, Miguel Uribe Turbay, suffered a serious attempt on his life during the election campaign. The attack took place in a plaza in Bogotá, where the politician suffered several gunshot wounds and was treated in critical condition for a long time.
