According to the statements of the Russian media and the investigative committee of the Russian Federation, the incident occurred in the elite residential neighborhood Volokolamsky", located in the north-western district of the Russian capital. The shooter was an unknown man who was waiting for the general on the stairwell outside the apartment. When the GRU officer came out, three shots were fired into his back. Alekseev was wounded: as neighbors said, the blood poured "all over the stairwell," and the figure was conscious and moaning.
Russian propagandists later said that Alekseev was sent to the hospital and that he was in serious condition: in intensive care.

Vladimir Stepanovich Alexeyev is a native of Khmelnitsky district of Vinnitsa region, who received his military education in Ryazan and has since made a career in the Russian army. Today, the general is 64 years old and has received 23 awards from the Kremlin: he became a "Hero of Russia" for his participation in the Syrian campaign. Among other things, he headed the 14th department of the GRU, which was "responsible for special forces."

The Defense Ministry's GHUR said Alekseev was involved in Russian air strikes on Ukrainian civilian, energy and military facilities because he had established a network of informants who leaked classified data. In addition, the general organized a fake "referendum" in the occupied part of the Kherson region.
Alekseyev was also involved in negotiations with the then owner of PMC "Wagner" Valery Prigozhin, who mutinied about the Russian Defense Ministry in June 2023. The Wall Street Journal media outlet recalled that the general was spotted during a meeting in Rostov, when Alexeyev jokingly suggested taking "Shoigu and Gerasimov" and not marching on Moscow.

Russian media and the Russian Investigative Committee reported details about Alexeyev's case. Video from the scene shows about a dozen special purpose vehicles in the courtyard of the house where the general lived. The area is cordoned off as investigators and experts are working, we see in the video. There is also information that the case will be supervised by the Russian prosecutor's office.
In the meantime, journalists from the media Baza visited the entrance where the attack took place and wrote, citing their own sources, that the shooter may be a woman. They added that on the floor on which Alekseev lived there were apartments for rent and assume that the attacker could live in one of them.
