54-year-old Maxima decided that "the country's security is no longer a matter of course."

In the Netherlands, the 54-year-old queen began training this week to become a reservist in the Dutch army, AP reports.

The Dutch Defense Ministry announced that the queen began her training on Wednesday.

"Since the security of the Netherlands can no longer be taken for granted, Maxima has decided to become a reservist," the country's defense ministry said in a statement.

The royal household released a statement saying the queen, "like many others, wants to contribute to this security."

Maxima is following in the footsteps of her daughter, who has also joined the military.
