The War Will Be Over In A Month?

The U.S. and Ukraine discussed the terms of a possible deal with Russian Federation.

Negotiators from the United States and Ukraine have discussed a possible peace deal with Russia as early as next month - March 2026.

This is reported by Reuters.

The agency writes that three sources familiar with the situation told about such an ambitious goal. It is believed that the deadline is likely to be pushed back due to a lack of agreement on a key issue, namely territorial.

Another five sources say that under the scheme under discussion, any agreement would be put to a referendum, which would run concurrently with national elections.

"The U.S. negotiating team, led by special envoy Steve Whitkoff and President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, expressed to their Ukrainian counterparts at recent meetings in Abu Dhabi and Miami that it would be better if the vote were held soon," the sources said.

The sources explained that US negotiators said that US President Donald Trump is likely to focus on domestic affairs as the midterm congressional elections in November are approaching. That means senior U.S. officials will have less time and political capital to conclude a peace deal.

Moreover, according to the two interlocutors, U.S. and Ukrainian officials have discussed the possibility of holding elections and a referendum as early as May. However, several other sources familiar with the talks called the schedule proposed by the Americans unrealistic.

"The Americans are in a big hurry," the source said, adding that the vote could be organized in less than six months, but it would still take a significant amount of time.

Ukraine, for its part, wants a cease-fire for the duration of the vote to protect the integrity of the referendum, noting that the Kremlin has a history of failing to fulfill its promises of an agreed cessation of hostilities.

"Kiev's position is that nothing can be agreed until there are security guarantees for Ukraine from the United States and partners," the source explained.
