Dozens of key commanders were eliminated at the start of an operation unique in Air Force history.
The IDF (Israel Defense Forces) has carried out the largest campaign in the history of the IAF, eliminating most of Iran's top commanders, writes cursorinfo.co.il.
The IDF said it had effectively "decapitated" the Iranian terrorist regime's leadership in a first strike on Tehran, eliminating the top military commanders in a matter of minutes.
The Israeli military said that as part of the initial phase of the operation, the IAF, acting on accurate intelligence, launched synchronized strikes on several sites in the Iranian capital. As a result, seven senior security officials were eliminated at different locations.
The IDF later confirmed that Iran's Chief of General Staff Abdolrahim Mousavi was among those eliminated. He was considered one of the country's key military leaders and successor to Mohammad Bagheri, who was eliminated earlier in Operation "People Like Lion" in June 2025.
According to the Israeli side, Mousavi coordinated the activities of the security apparatus and was responsible for launching hundreds of ballistic missiles into Israeli territory. His elimination was part of a large-scale campaign to neutralize the top commanders.
A total of 40 senior commanders have been eliminated since the beginning of the preventive operation, according to the IDF. Israel calls it a historic blow to the command structure of Iranian forces.
In addition, according to the military, most air defense systems in western and central Iran have been disabled, allowing the Israeli Air Force freedom of action in the airspace, including the Tehran area.
