Friedrich Merz: We Stand On The Side Of Ukraine

Events around Iran are closely linked to Russia's war of aggression.

At a joint press conference with Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz noted that the countries share many of the U.S. and Israeli goals, but "with each new day of war, more questions arise."

"We are concerned that there does not seem to be a common plan for how this war can be brought to a quick and credible conclusion," Merz said. - We have no interest in destroying Iran's territorial integrity, its statehood or its economic vitality.

A scenario like the one we have seen in Libya, Iraq or other states in the region would harm us all. It affects our security, our energy supply, and potential migration events.

We should not view the dramatic events surrounding Iran in isolation. They are closely linked to Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, which is why we must not weaken our support for Kiev now. While other partners are withdrawing forces from NATO's eastern and northern flanks, we remain engaged there."

The German chancellor said he shares the hope that this war will end quickly.

"If it ends quickly, we will also relatively quickly see normalization in the oil and energy markets again," he said. - "So from our point of view - and from my point of view - there is no reason to consider easing sanctions against Russia.

And if faced with a choice between sanctions or solidarity, our position is clear: we stand on the side of Ukraine.
