EU And NATO Country May Get Involved In A War With Iran At The Request Of The US

Troop deployment will be discussed at the meeting.

The deployment of US warplanes to Romania amid war in the Middle East could make the country complicit in the conflict. It could also trigger a reaction from Iran.

This was said by retired Sandu Commander Valentin Mateiu in an interview with Digi24.

The deployment of troops will be discussed at a meeting

He said the deployment of the US military will be discussed at a meeting of Romania's National Security Council (CSAT).

The issue is a request by an ally to deploy military capabilities in accordance with bilateral agreements between the countries.

Mateiu explained that, theoretically, Romania could host US refueling planes or combat aircraft. However, if such planes carry out combat missions against Iran directly from the country's territory, it could mean Romania's de facto participation in the war.

"The moment they operate directly from our territory, we become a complicit party, and there are questions of international law," he said.

At the same time, the military officer emphasized that any decision would be political and should take into account Romania's allied commitments to the United States.

Risk of strikes from Iran

He also warned that if Romania participates in operations, Iran could consider it as a potential target for strikes.

"Tehran has already stated that it could attack countries from whose territory strikes are carried out or through whose airspace Iranian attack planes fly," Mateiu explained.

He said Iran no longer has the former ballistic missile capability, but continues to actively use Shaheds. In addition, the risk of terrorist attacks is not excluded.

Strategic partnership with the United States

Despite the possible risks, Mateiu emphasized the importance of Romania's strategic partnership with the United States.

"We have a strategic partner, we have always emphasized our friendship with the United States, the importance of the Cogelniceanu base (NATO airbase in Romania - ed.), and yes, you know a friend in need," he added.
