The U.S. President echoed what Reagan said about the Soviet Union.
Donald Trump said that Iran is an "evil empire" and he will not allow it to destroy the whole world. The American leader wrote about this on the social network Truth Social.
He emphasized that by far the United States "is the largest producer of oil in the world," so when oil prices rise, Washington "makes a lot of money."
"But of far greater interest and importance to me as president is preventing the evil empire, Iran, from having nuclear weapons and preventing the destruction of the Middle East and indeed the entire world. I will never let that happen!" - Trump wrote.
The phrase "evil empire" was first used by former U.S. President Ronald Reagan on March 8, 1983, in a speech before the National Association of Evangelicals in Orlando, referring to the Soviet Union in the context of the Cold War ideological confrontation. Reagan argued that the USSR represented "the focus of evil in the modern world" and contrasted the Soviet system with Western democratic values.
