Israel Shot Down The Drones With Laser Air Defense

This fundamentally changes the rules of air warfare.

The Israeli army has used the latest Iron Beam laser interception system for the first time in real combat. The system successfully destroyed drones launched by Hezbollah militants.

The first operational use of the technology was reported by the specialized publication IsraelDefense, reports "Unian".

Lethal Light: How the new weapon works against drones and missiles

The system uses a 100 kilowatt beam to instantly burn out targets in the sky. It fundamentally changes the rules of air warfare. Interception occurs at the speed of light, and the cost per shot is virtually equal to the cost of electricity. That's the laser's main advantage over the Iron Dome system's expensive interceptor missiles.

Engineers at Rafael and Elbit Systems have been building this project for more than three decades. Only in September, the Israeli Defense Ministry and Air Force completed the final series of tests in the south of the country. Then the system was taught to effectively shoot down not only drones, but also mortar shells and rockets. In December 2025, the military officially adopted the first installations in the IDF.

Now the laser has become part of a multi-level defense. It works in a unified network with the David's Board and Arrow systems. As Hezbollah has stepped up its shelling, the strain on air defense has increased to a critical point. The new technology should close gaps at ranges from a few hundred meters to several kilometers.
