Emmanuel Macron initiates a UN mechanism.
France will initiate UN-level talks to restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
French President Emmanuel Macron announced this after an EU summit in Brussels.
Macron announced that France has begun consultations with key partners on the possibility of setting up a UN mechanism to secure the strait.
"We have started an exploratory process and we will see in the coming days whether it has a chance of success," he said.
The French leader has already held talks with two key players:
Narendra Modi - India's prime minister, spoke by phone Thursday morning
António Guterres - the UN secretary general, joined the European Council meeting over lunch.
Afterward, Macron briefed the other EU leaders.
"I think this is something that can help. I'm cautious because it's not just up to us," Macron said, without revealing details of the plan.
