Chisinau is getting out from under Moscow's influence.
The Moldovan Parliament supported in the first reading the denunciation of the agreement on the creation of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
This was reported by the Moldpres.
The initiator of the denunciation of the agreement on the creation of the CIS is the Moldovan Foreign Ministry, which cited the fact that the values and basic principles of the CIS are not respected, in particular the provision that member states recognize and mutually respect the territorial integrity and inviolability of existing borders.
Foreign Minister Mihai Popşoi said at a session of the Moldovan parliament that the principles on the basis of which the CIS was created are violated by Russia, which is waging war against Ukraine, carries out acts of aggression against Georgia and illegally keeps military units on Moldova's territory. Also, the denunciation of the CIS agreement is a natural and inevitable step towards EU membership.
"Today we stand at a crossroads, and the decision can no longer be postponed. For more than three decades we have been dragging a heavy burden behind us, an invisible chain that has kept us tied to a past that no longer belongs to us. The CIS is an organization born from the ashes of a fallen empire and gradually transformed into an instrument for preserving Moscow's influence over its neighbors. This "suitcase without a handle" - as one former president called it - did not bring us prosperity, did not protect our sovereignty, did not provide us with security. On the contrary: it kept us in a gray zone, made us vulnerable to energy, political and military blackmail," Popşoi said.
After the denunciation, Moldova's state budget will save about 3.1 million lei, which now constitute an annual contribution to the CIS budget. The relations with the CIS member states after the denunciation will be continued on bilateral and multilateral platforms, and Moldova will remain a party to a number of CIS agreements, first of all in the trade, economic and social sectors.
Over the last two years, Moldova has initiated a large-scale process of reviewing the relevance and applicability of the agreements concluded within the CIS. At the moment, 71 out of 283 CIS agreements have already been denounced, and about 60 are in the process of review.
On March 11, it was reported that the Moldovan government approved the denunciation of the fundamental documents of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and thus launched the procedure of final withdrawal from the organization.
In 1991, the founding republics of the USSR signed the Belovezhskoe Agreement, according to which it was proclaimed the termination of the existence of the USSR and the creation of the CIS in its place. The founding republics of the USSR in 1922 were the RSFSR (Russia), the Ukrainian SSR (Ukraine), the BSSR (Belarus) and the ZSRFR (Transcaucasian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic, which included Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia).
