Hungarian Elections: How The Opposition Plans To Remove Orban And His "mafia" From Power

The Leader of the Opposition made an important statement.

Hungarian opposition leader Peter Magyar has promised that his Tisza party will remove key allies of incumbent Prime Minister Viktor Orban from power if it wins the election and wins an overwhelming majority of seats in parliament. The politician called Orban and his associates a "mafia."

Note: For such decisions, Magyar needs to win a landslide victory in the April 12 vote. A parliamentary majority (two-thirds of parliamentary votes) could allow the ruling political force to make legislative decisions or even change the constitution without seeking support from the opposition. This is according to Bloomberg.

What's in Magyar's plans

The Hungarian prime minister's main rival said he would "restore the rule of law and democratic pluralism" in the country if he wins, as well as make a final break with the 16-year era of Orban's rule.

Speaking at a campaign rally in northeastern Hungary on Monday, March 23, Magyar asked for electoral support so he could complete "regime change."

Calling Orban and his colleagues a "mafia," Magyar said he would like to replace: the president, the heads of the supreme and constitutional courts, the state audit office and antitrust authority, and the chief prosecutor. He said they had failed to fulfill their constitutional duties and instead prioritized political allegiance to their "ringleader" Orban.

With less than three weeks before election day, Magyar's party has a double-digit lead in independent polls, but it is unclear whether that will be enough to remove Orban. The latter, during his years in power, has rewritten the constitution, changed electoral districts and appointed loyalists to key institutions, creating an election-resistant "illiberal" model.
