Buffett defends charitable giving program 'Giving Pledge'

Co-founder of the initiative "Giving Pledge" Warren Buffett spoke in its defense amid increasing criticism from a part of billionaires. He said he believes the project is "quite successful" and it continues to attract new participants despite its age, writes Entrepreneur (translated by Charter97.org).

"The Giving Pledge" was created in 2010 by Buffett together with Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates. The initiative involves the world's richest people pledging to donate the majority of their wealth to charity during their lifetime or after their death.

The project has faced growing opposition in recent years, however. One of the most vocal critics has been billionaire Peter Thiel, who is reportedly urging some participants to renege on their commitments. He claims that a number of signatories regret their participation and fear that funds may be diverted to projects that do not align with their views.

A parallel influx of new participants has been observed, with the number of people joining in recent years down significantly from the first decade of the initiative's existence. Some billionaires are also distancing themselves from the project or reconsidering their commitments.

The debate surrounding the Giving Pledge reflects a broader dispute over exactly how the wealthy should impact society - through large-scale philanthropy or through business development and investment. Despite the criticism, Buffett insists that the voluntary giving model remains an effective tool for solving global problems.
