Tehran has already received payment on some flights.
Iran has started charging transit fees from some commercial ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, Bloomberg reported citing unnamed informed sources. According to the agency, there are no clear rates, the amount is calculated for each voyage separately, the fee for passage can reach up to $2 million per vessel. As Bloomberg notes, Iran has already received payment for some voyages, "although the mechanism and currency of payment are still unclear."
It has previously been reported that Iran wants to formalize the collection of fees for the safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz. Last week, an Iranian lawmaker said that a proposal to oblige countries to pay Iran for using the Strait of Hormuz as a safe sea route was being considered in parliament. However, Bloomberg sources note that Arab countries consider payments for passage through the Strait of Hormuz unacceptable. As is known, the northern coast of the strait belongs to Iran, while the southern coast belongs to the UAE and Oman. In addition, India has already stated that international law guarantees the right of freedom of navigation through the strait and no one has the right to charge additional fees for this.
